Tradition and modernity

Mozart and Beethoven seen in the light of tradition and modernity. On the one hand, there is an orchestra -Mozarteumorchester Salzburg- that is the custodian of the most refined tradition in the interpretation of the composer’s music. Founded in 1841 by Constance Weber, Mozart’s widow, -the year before she died-, we have before us one of the most venerated musical institutions of Europe.

On the other, we have two artists. English conductor Trevor Pinnock, who, as a harpsichordist, led the great revolution of historically informed musical interpretation and the Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires, who is the embodiment of delicacy, emotion and musical evanescence. The two collaborate frequently. And beside them, the Mozarteum, an orchestra which has refreshed its tradition by working with conductors such as Ivor Bolton. This crisp, homogenous sounding ensemble is ideal to address the vibrant Coriolan Overture (1807), the warm- coloured and poetic Piano concerto no. 3 by Beethoven (1803), and conclude with Symphony no. 41 by Mozart (1788), a piece that is so monumental, majestic and overwhelming that thirty years before Mozart died in 1791, it became known by the nickname “Júpiter”.

With 90 musicians, this is one of the principal orchestras of Austria, known for its distinctive sound and style. Its repertory includes nearly every period of music and the list of recordings is impressive, having travelled around the world with conductors such as Leopold Hager or Ivor Bolton, among others.
