Encouraging the voices of tomorrow

In conjunction with the Association of the Seville Friends of the Opera (Asociación Sevillana de Amigos de la Ópera- ASAO), the main stage of the Teatro de la Maestranza hosts the Gala event of the competition Certamen Nuevas Voces Ciudad de Sevilla, a joint initiative that seeks to promote young singers in the world of opera. The call for participants has become a key event in the yearly calendar of opera in Spain; in effect, it has been a trampoline in the career of rising stars who now have consolidated careers such as Leonor Bonilla, Berna Perles, Damián del Castillo or Natalia Labourdette.

The Teatro de la Maestranza takes into account the presence of recognised Spanish voices of excellence when putting together its casts; and it is proud to support a competition which contributes decisively to the introduction of new opera stage voices. As a result, the Maestranza establishes an active and co-operative connection with the opera lovers of Seville who are bound together in an association, founded in 1990, and whose trajectory has evolved in parallel with the construction of the theatre in the same period.

This competition has the support of various institutions: the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Sports of the Andalusian regional government, the Festival of Spanish Music of Cadiz, The Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, the City Hall of Seville, the “Real Círculo de Labradores” of Seville; along with the collaboration of prestigious entities such as the Festival della Valle D’Itria de Martina Franca or the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation, with whom it partners in activities to promote the future of promising young singers.
