Sacred and Baroque

Swiss Chilean tenor Emiliano González Toro leads the Paris- based period instrument Ensemble I Gemelli, which he created in 2018 with soprano Mathilde Etienne, for a performance that is part of the programme of the annual Ancient Music Festival of Seville/ Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla (FeMÀS).

The ensemble specializes in vocal music of the 17th century with rehearsal and recording techniques which, in many cases, dispense with the baton. Among other awards, it has received various Diapason D’Or and Choc de Classica, despite its recent history.

For this concert, the programme is dedicated to Claudio Monteverdi and his Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers of the Blessed Virgin), a sacred composition published in 1610 in Venice. Without doubt, it is one of the most important works by the composer from Cremona and a reference work in religious music before the changes made by Johann Sebastian Bach.
