A 150-year-old musical comedy

Above all, The Bat is a musical comedy which displays the brilliant genius of its creator, Johann B. Strauss, father of the Viennese waltz and one of the most well- known European composers. As a theatrical play, it hits the mark; but what makes the author’s operetta an undisputable success is its brilliant musical score.

This is a ludicrous vaudeville where the stories of the different characters are interspersed with the most beautiful of songs and dances, that combine ballroom and folk traditions. A truly delightful story full of the charm of musical Romanticism of the era. The plot has all the ingredients of the best comedy muddles: infidelities, disguises to hide identities, characters who pretend to be who they are not. Even a stay in prison for the main protagonist, Eisenstein, the outwitted prankster. Rosalinda and her husband hide the truth while their servant Adela, of artistic vocation, becomes the fundamental piece in a plot which includes theatregoers, aristocrats, civil servants, and ex-lovers who conceal their identity.

No better reason to raise a glass of champagne or Spanish cava in honour of the most famous operetta by Strauss. It coincides with a three-way anniversary: 150 years since its premiere in Vienna,125 years since the death (2024) and 200 years since the birth of its creator (2025).

In concert version, we will enjoy French maestro Marc Minkowski, an excellent interpreter of Baroque, classical and operetta repertoire, beside his orchestra Les Musiciens du Louvre, the famous French ensemble from Grenoble.
